Interests

§         Music – I have played keyboards in various cover bands for the last five years, in bars and private functions around Auckland. As a one-time member of the band, ‘Adrenalin’, I wrote for and played on a CD produced in 1994. I am an avid fan of rock, pop, classical and jazz music

§         Linux – I am a member of the New Zealand Linux Users group and run a Linux server for myself and my flatmates, used as a gateway/proxy-server/file-server/print-server, mail server etc, mainly through a suite of shell scripts and Java programs that I have developed

§         Food – I am a keen home chef, and enjoy ethnic and continental cooking, I am a big fan of fine wines, boutique beers and gourmet coffee

Career Focus

I am particularly interested in distributed systems and distributed technologies such as RMI and DCOM. I am also interested in data warehousing and mining, and database design in general. I enjoy programming in Java, Delphi and Visual Basic, and I have spent a lot of time working with OLE Automation of Office objects, and database programming with JDBC. I intend to do an undergraduate project involving the development of visual database components for Java and JDBC. I enjoy working with UNIX operating systems, and would like to exploit Java’s potential as an integration tool between various platforms, operating systems and interfaces. I am a Linux and Open-Source enthusiast and advocate, and would like to see Linux and GPL software employed in many more commercial applications.
